WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Supreme Court has rejected, for now, a West Virginia law that would allow transgender athletes to compete on female sports teams at public schools.

The high court ruled against the legislation 7-to-2, with justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas voting in favor. Alito wrote in a dissenting opinion that a lower court failed to explain its reasoning for putting the law on hold.

The issue stems from the case of 12-year-old transgender girl Becky Pepper-Jackson, who runs track and cross country at a Harrison County middle school.

She sued the Mountain State after the law passed.

State Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said the rejection was nothing more than a “procedural setback.”
