STAUNTON, Va. — The name of a street in the City of Staunton’s West End took on a whole new meaning following a Friday afternoon ceremony.

Queen City officials say that Green Street, in the Newtown Historic District, was originally named in honor of General Nathaniel Greene, a Revolutionary War hero.

However, the city is expanding that honor this afternoon to Captains William Washington Green Junior and Senior.

Staunton Mayor Stephen Claffey read a proclamation during a ceremony in City Council chambers.

Green Senior was a Buffalo Solider for the U-S Army in World War I, retiring to Staunton following his service. His son, Green Junior, was a Tuskegee Airman who flew in 123 combat missions during World War II.
