STAUNTON, Va – A Staunton man is in custody following a fatal shooting Friday morning.
Staunton Police Sergeant Butch Shifflett stated in a news release that the incident happened just before 10 o’clock at the Howard Johnson Motel on North Central Avenue.
Shifflett reported the suspect fled the scene but was located about an hour later and taken into custody.
Meanwhile, the victim died at the scene and was identified as 39-year-old Jonathan Michael Jacobs of Staunton.
The suspect, 35-year-old Rodney Dwayne Phillips, has been charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
