Longtime Virginia Senator Dick Saslaw announced his retirement yesterday during a floor speech.

Saslaw reminisced over his 48 years in the General Assembly, including 44 years spent in the Senate. He recalled meeting Queen Elizabeth, speaking with Elizabeth Taylor and sitting in on the inaugurations of 12 Virginia governors.

The Democratic senator added that Virginia has gotten better in how it treats marginalized groups, saying he was proud to have been a part of that.

His retirement date is effective January 10th of next year.
