CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va – It appears that the man accused of killing three University of Virginia football and injuring others in a shooting last year is waiving his right to a speedy trial.
Online court records show that the three second degree murder charges against Christopher Darnell Jones will not be prosecuted following a hearing Friday in Albemarle County Circuit Court.
Instead, the 23-year-old Jones will face 13 new charges, including six for aggravated murder of multiple persons. His next court appearance is set for February 5th of next year.
This comes the same day that Attorney General Jason Miyares announced the conclusion of an external review on the events of November 13th of last year that led to the deaths of Devin Chandler, D’Sean Perry, and Lavel Davis Junior. His report was sent to the school.
UVA received the report Friday and university leadership has begun to review it, spokesperson Brian Coy said in an emailed statement. The recommendations will be discussed with UVA’s Board of Visitors and those most affected by the shooting and then released publicly, “with a goal of doing so by early November,” Coy said.
