CHARLESTON, W.Va. – James Madison doubled its run output with a six-run seventh inning to open the weekend with a 13-6 win over Marshall on Friday night at GoMart Ballpark in Sun Belt Conference baseball.
The Dukes improved to 25-20, 10-10 SBC while the Thundering Herd dropped its fifth straight and fell to 16-27, 5-17 SBC.
Sophomore Todd Mozoki started and earned his first win of the season behind six-plus innings and three strikeouts. Sophomore Ryan Dooley lead the way at plate for JMU by going 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBI’s.
How It Happened
Second Inning
The Dukes struck first with a run before the Herd matched their run in the home half of the inning. Back-to-back singles put redshirt senior Trevon Dabney on third before scoring on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Jason Schiavone.
A leadoff double from MU was followed by a single from Gio Ferraro to knot the game at one.
Fourth Inning
Dooley gave the lead back to JMU after putting the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his third homer of the year and a two-run blast for a 3-1 lead.
Sixth Inning
JMU doubled its lead in the sixth after scoring a trio of runs. Freshman Mike Mancini reached on an error to lead off the inning before scoring the first run after stealing second, moving to third on a wild pitch and then scoring on an errant throw to third on the wild pitch. Two more runs scored on a single from Dooley and then a bases loaded walk drawn by redshirt junior Mason Dunaway for a 6-1 lead.
Seventh Inning
Three straight hits knocked in six runs for the Dukes after drawing three walks to load the bases. Dooley knocked in his fourth run of the game with an infield single before freshman Wyatt Peifer doubled in a pair of runs. Graduate Jack Cone capped the scoring by giving JMU a 12-1 lead with a three-run no-doubter over the left center field wall.
Marshall struck for four runs in the home half of inning with a bases loaded triple to make it 12-4 before adding a run on an error.
Eighth Inning
Mancini led off the inning with a triple before trotting across home plate the next at bat on Dabney’s double for a 13-5 lead.
A sacrifice fly for the Herd got the run back for the hosts to make it 13-6.
Game Notes
• Jack Cone has now homered in three of the last four games for the Dukes.
• Mike Mancini has three triples on the season, the most by a Duke since Michael Morgan had three in 2019.
• Mike Mancini, Kyle Novak and Fenwick Trimble all have reached base in 11 straight games.
