HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison grabbed 49 rebounds compared to Arkansas State’s 36 to cruise past the Red Wolves, 70-57, on Saturday afternoon inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
JMU (20-6, 10-4) SBC was phenomenal from the free throw line, going 18-for-20 (90.0%) as Head Coach Sean O’Regan picked up career win No. 150. A-State (8-17, 3-11 SBC) looks to regroup versus South Alabama on Feb. 16.
Senior Kiki Jefferson recorded 22 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and had three blocks in the win. The guard also drew eight fouls, to which Jefferson sank 11-of-13 from the line. Junior Kseniia Kozlova caused havoc in the paint, finishing the afternoon with 17 points and eight boards. Graduate student Caroline Germond Division I career-highs in points (11) and rebounds (seven), while dishing out four assists. Junior Jamia Hazell scored nine points, while classmate Steph Ouderkirk wrangled in a season-high nine rebounds.
How It Happened
• The two teams went shot-for-shot at the start of the opening quarter, with the score reading 11-11 at the first media timeout. However, the Dukes went on a 7-0 run to close the period with an 18-11 lead.
• JMU’s advantage grew to 14, with a score of 25-11 at the 8:10 mark of the second. The Dukes then went cold halfway through the frame, going scoreless for over three minutes. Arkansas State cut into the deficit but trailed at halftime 33-25.
• James Madison tallied 22 points in the third, with nine coming from Jefferson to grow the lead to 11, 55-44, with one quarter to go.
• Hazell paced the Dukes with six points in the fourth quarter to help push JMU over Arkansas State, 70-57. James Madison went 9-for-11 (81.8%) and grabbed 11 rebounds in the final frame.
Game Notes
• JMU is now tied 1-1 in the all-time series versus Arkansas State.
• O’Regan is the second-fastest head coach in program history to win 150 games, doing so in 210 games. James Madison Hall of Fame inductee Shelia Moorman (1982-97) reached the milestone in her first 206 outings at the helm of the program.
• The Dukes have now recorded four games in 2022-23 shooting 90% or better from the charity stripe. The best performance this season for the team came against Old Dominion when they went 18-for-19 (94.7%) from the line.
• Additionally, with 13 tries from the free throw line, Jefferson now has five games in her senior campaign where she’s had 10-plus attempts.
• Jefferson’s 22-point outing marked her 12th game with 20 or more points this season.
• JMU shot 4-of-20 (20.0%) from three-point range, the second-worst performance this year for the team in terms of efficiency. The lowest percentage of makes for the program in 2022-23 was 16.7% (4-of-24) from the long line at Southern Miss on Jan. 7.
• The Dukes’ 49 total rebounds and 16 offense rebounds are both the fifth-best performances for the team this season. The most rebounds James Madison has pulled down this year was 57 at Longwood (Nov. 17), while the most offensive rebounds were 23 at William & Mary (Dec. 11).
• O’Regan’s squad played their cleanest game all season, committing just eight personal fouls.
• James Madison out-rebounded Arkansas State 49-36 for a rebounding margin of +13. The Dukes have won the rebounding battle by double figures nine times this season and three times in conference play. The program’s best margin this year was +37 at Longwood on Nov. 17.
• Germond has recorded at least four assists for the 14th time this season. Moreover, she’s accumulated 30 assists in the last seven games.
• The Purple Out drew 3,737 fans, the best crowd at a JMU women’s basketball game in 2022-23.
