A woman escaped an attempted abduction, and her alleged captor was shot by Harrisonburg Police over the weekend.

According to city communications director Mike Parks, officers responded to calls of a domestic disturbance involving a weapon on Old Furnace Road around 6:30 Saturday night.

He said that a 30-year-old male had abducted a 52-year-old female, and officers pursued the driver into downtown, trapping him near Court Square and Liberty Street.

The unnamed woman escaped unharmed, but Parks said the driver refused to drop his weapon and fired a shot from inside the vehicle. Officers then opened fire on the suspect, who was taken to U-V-A Medical Center in critical condition.

All involved officers have been placed on leave pending an investigation.
