HARRISONBURG, Va – Harrisonburg City Council voted Tuesday night to apply for 165-thousand dollars in federal funding that will pay for repairs to the Lucy Simms Center.

Parts of the 85-year-old building have fallen into disrepair, and some of the original windows are visibly rusty. Councilwoman Monica Robinson says that the money through the African American Civil Rights Grant Program would restore the Center to its former glory.

Some of the funding would go toward repainting and weatherproofing, including the installation of storm windows to protect the original hardware.

The Simms Center was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
