The turnover in the General Assembly following this year’s session could mean one in every five Virginia lawmakers will be a new face in 2024.

Over a dozen state legislators have recently announced their retirements, including generational figures like senators Dick Saslaw and Tommy Norment.

Many have cited redistricting efforts approved last year as their reason for jumping ship. Political analyst Bob Holmsworth has essentially called the state’s redistricting process “backdoor term limits.”

Factoring in retiring lawmakers and vulnerable ones who could feasibly lose their primaries, up to 20-percent of next year’s General Assembly could be fresh blood.
