IRVING, Texas – James Madison lacrosse took multiple weekly honors from the American Athletic Conference for the third straight week, as Isabella Peterson was named the Attack Player of the Week and Brianna Mennella was named the Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Peterson becomes the first Duke to repeat a weekly honor while Mennella becomes the seventh Duke to win a weekly award from the league this season. Mennella is the second freshman award winner from JMU, joining Maddie Epke.
Peterson, a redshirt junior, scored a total of 12 goals (6.0/game) this week, finishing on 52.1% of shots taken. She accounted for 40% of JMU’s 30 goals this week and marked a point on half of JMU’s tallies, totaling 15. She also led the way in the draw circle with 11 total for the week.
The Sparks, Md. native’s big week on attack kept her at the top of the league in statistical rankings. She now ranks first in total goals (36) and goals per game (4.50), second in points (42) and points per game (5.25) and fifth in draw controls per game (4.12).
Mennella secured her first career hat trick against No. 23 Johns Hopkins, scoring two of her goals in the fourth quarter where the Dukes blitzed the Blue Jays in a 7-0 deciding period. She hit three of her four shots on Saturday for a .750 percentage.
The Denville, N.J. native added an assist against Liberty for four points on the week and also had a caused turnover and a ground ball.
JMU moved up one more spot to No. 7 in the ILWomen/IWLCA combined poll this week after wins against Liberty and No. 23 Johns Hopkins, the latter of which marked their second ranked-opponent win of the season.
The Dukes will begin play in The American this weekend with a home battle against No. 8 Florida, who is coming off a top-10 win against Loyola this past weekend.
