SHIPMAN, Va – Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that happened Tuesday evening in Nelson County.

Spokesperson Shelby Crouch reported that the accident happened just after 5:30 pm on Route 639 just north of Serenity Trail.

A 1997 Mazda Protégé attempted to turn left onto Route 639 from a private driveway when it crossed over the road, ran off the right side of the road, down an embankment, and struck a tree and a telephone pole guide wire.

The driver, 86-yer-old James Kidd of Shipman, died at the scene. Crouch said he was not wearing a seatbelt.
