A 62-acre controlled burn is set for today in western Rockingham County.
The National Forest said the prescribed burn will happen within the George Washington National Forest near Slate Lick Fields, just over four miles south of Fulks Run.
According to the service, the goal is to reduce the risk of uncontrolled wildfires by removing a build-up of deadfall and dried leaves. They say the burn will also improve wildlife habitats.
Officials plan to extinguish the burn by the end of the day.
