HARRISONBURG VA: (WSVA) – The cicadas are coming back in parts of the commonwealth this spring – in a way we’ve never seen.
For the first time in 221 years, two broods of the big, green and brown insects are set to emerge from the ground at the same time. This hasn’t happened since 1803, as the Louisiana Purchase was being signed.
The bugs may be annoyingly noisy, but they’re harmless. They can’t sting, and they don’t eat crops, but their eggs have been known to damage smaller trees.
Southern Virginia is expected to see the worst of the invasion, but don’t be surprised if you hear a cicada serenade here in the Valley.
