WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Bridgewater College softball team split its first doubleheader in Winter Haven, Florida, on Monday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
• The Eagles got the scoring going in the bottom of the second inning. Andrea Savage got the inning started with a lead-off single. Brooklynn Fridley attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but stretched it out for a single to put two runners on with no outs. Hannah Mahan followed Fridley and executed a sacrifice bunt to perfection putting two runners in scoring position for Torie Shifflett who singled to centerfield to score Savage. Kaelyn Ramsey followed Shifflett with a double down the left-field line to score Shifflett. Sarah Wimer finished the scoring off with a single to the right side to bring in Ramsey making it 3-0 for BC.

• Dubuque got its only hit on the game in the top of the third inning on a lead-off single. The Spartans added anther runner after an error by BC, but the Eagles got out of the bind thanks a pair of strikeouts from Mackenzie Cauthorn.

• Mahan started the fourth inning by reaching on an error and came around to score on a Shifflett rip to centerfield.

• The Eagles left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, but made up for it in the bottom of the sixth as Jazmyne Smith crushed a two-run homer to straight-away centerfield to push BC out in front, 6-0.

• Cauthorn continued to deal and sat down the Spartans in order in the top of the seventh to secure the win.

GAME STATS
• Cauthorn picked up the win after going the distance for the complete-game shutout. The freshmen allowed just one hit and surrendered a single walk to go along with six strikeouts.

• Shifflett and Wimer turned in 3-for-4 efforts at the plate in the win.

• Paige Manning took the loss for Dubuque after giving up 13 hits in 4.0 innings of work.

• Savage went 2-for-3 at the dish on the game and scored a run.

• The Eagles totaled a massive 15 hits in the win.

Game Two
• Alma struck first in the bottom of the first with a RBI single to left, putting the Scots ahead 1-0.

• The Eagles wasted no time striking back in the top of the second as Morgan Lucas homered to knot the game at 1-1. The Scots responded in the bottom half of the frame, taking advantage of some BC miscues. Alma led the inning off with a single and pushed the runner into scoring position thanks to a throwing error by the BC defense. The lead-off runner eventually scored on a ground out to put the Scots in front 2-1.

• More Bridgewater errors led to a pair of runs by Alma in the bottom of the third. AC added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth by virtue of a BC error and an RBI base knock.

• The Eagles got back on the board in the top of the sixth as Smith got on base with a single with one gone in the inning. A wild pitch moved the first baseman into scoring position before Savage stepped to the plate. The freshman grounded a ball to short stop, but the throw was off the mark allowing for her to reach safely and for Smith to score. Jordan Wise stepped up next to pinch hit and delivered with a single to score Peyton Gregory who came in the game to run for Savage, putting BC back to within three runs.

• The Scots added four runs in the top of the sixth to push ahead 10-4 heading into the seventh. The Eagles were retired in order in the visiting half of the seventh to secure the game for Alma.

GAME STATS
• Wimer turned in a 1-for-2 effort in the second game of the day for BC and added a walk.

• Morgan Wetsall went all seven for Alma and picked up the win after allowing only one earned run and striking out four batters.

• Elena Williams took the loss for BC after going 2.1 innings and yielding four runs (one earned).

• Jenna Holzinger added four RBI for the Scots and scored twice in the win.

• The Eagles allowed just three earned runs in the contest thanks to five defensive errors.

UP NEXT
Bridgewater continues its stay in Florida with a pair of games on Tuesday. The Eagles take on Cabrini at 11:30 am and then battle Adrian at 2 p.m.
