FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Bridgewater College baseball fell to Mary Washington 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon
Final Score: Mary Washington 7, Bridgewater 3
Records: Bridgewater, 4-12 ; Mary Washington 14-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
• BC got on the board right away in the top of the first and Jarret Biesecker led the game off with a single up the middle. Bridgewater quickly loaded the bases with no outs as Jeffrey Snider walked and Brandan Hartman was hit by a pitch. Collin Reid stepped to the plate next and grounded into a double play, but Biesecker came around to score, giving BC an early 1-0 lead.
• Mary Washington responded immediately with a double to start the bottom half of the first. The leadoff man eventually came around to score on a two-out single getting UMW on the board. An error by the BC defense during the next at bat extended the inning and allowed for Mary Washington to take the lead on a single through the left side. Starting pitcher Nick Harris added a punchout for the final out of the frame but the damage had been done with the home side in front 1-0.
• Mary Washington tagged on three more runs in the bottom of the second by virtue of a pair of BC miscues and a trio of base knocks. Now trailing 5-1, Bridgewater put two runners aboard again in the form of a Biesecker base hit and another Snider walk. Hartman field out to allow the runners to advance but they were ultimately left stranded in scoring position.
• UMW extended the lead in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a few more miscues by the Bridgewater defense. Mary Washington loaded the bases with two away in the frame and an error by the catcher for BC allowed for an Eagles to score. A balk allowed for another UMW run to score and pushed the lead to 7-1.
• Bridgewater got the bats going in the top of the sixth. After Snider walked again Hartman singled. Both runners advanced after a tag-up on a flyout by Reid and Snider came around to score on a passed ball at the plate. Brett Tharp stepped to the plate next and singled to bring Hartman in to score making it a 7-3 ballgame. Mary Washington made the call to the bullpen and went to Jackson Beal who got two quick flyouts to leave Tharp stranded.
• BC had runners aboard multiple times down the stretch, including in the top of the ninth. Jonathan Sexton led off with a single down the third-base line but a pair of strikeouts and a flyout sealed the deal for UMW
