BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Bridgewater College women’s lacrosse team picked up an 18-7 win against Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC play at the Jopson Athletic Complex on Wednesday night.

Prior to the beginning of the contest, the Eagles dedicated their game to Morgan’s Message, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health, normalizing the conversations about mental health and to ensure that mental health is treated equally to physical health for all student-athletes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Madeline Magill took a feed from Aunnie Hacker to open the scoring just a minute and 20 seconds into the game as the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead. The advantage doubled as Annika Benson scored unassisted with less than eight minutes left in the opening quarter. Madison Pfister and Mikayla Szudera connected for the Marlins’ first goal of the afternoon to set the score at 2-1 after the first 15 minutes.

• In the second quarter, Lauren Roberts scored her first of the game at the 12:10 mark and followed that up with another goal just 13 seconds later to put BC up 4-1. Jenna Entsminger caught a pass in transition from Kaitlyn Clark to get the Eagles to a 5-1 lead and the sophomore scored again less than a minute later to make it 6-1. Hacker and Kaity Petersheim connected just 20 seconds later and Entsminger completed a second-quarter hat trick with 4:19 left in the half as BC went up 8-1. VWU was able to get one back before the break but the Eagles led 9-2 at halftime.

• Roberts and Magill each scored out the gates of the third quarter and Ashley Venit scored with 13 minutes left in the quarter to make the score 11-2. Caris Cianelli tallied a goal to put the Eagles up by 10 and begin a running clock. The two sides traded goals with less than three minutes to go as Bridgewater led 13-3 after the third period.

• Just 10 seconds into the final quarter of play Madelaine Godat scored off an assist from Faith Bartos and Godat scored again as the Eagles went ahead 15-3. Michaela Elston scored a pair of back-to-back goals for the visitors, but Roberts scored on a free-position shot and Petersheim tallied a man-up goal on a free position to maintain a 12-goal edge. Helen Kennedy-Butler got two back for the Marlins, but Magill sealed the game with a goal with under 30 seconds to go on an assist from Miranda Coleman as the Eagles walked away with an 18-7 win.

GAME STATS
• Roberts finished with four goals to go with three draw controls, a CT and a ground ball, while Magill and Entsminger each recorded hat tricks.

• Hacker led the team with a five-point performance off a goal and four assists, while Petersheim and Godat each had two scores.

• Cianelli, Benson and Venit also added to the scoring in the win.

• Petersheim led the team with five draw controls.

• Julia Mohler and Rachael Robinson each caused three turnovers with the team totaling 14 CTs in the victory.

• Robinson paced the Eagles with six ground balls, while Hacker grabbed three. Benson, Cianelli and Hannah Sherin all finished with two apiece.

• Robinson made seven saves in all 60 minutes for the win, while Brittneyann Hoover stopped 12 shots in the loss.

Bridgewater hosts Averett in ODAC action on Saturday, April 8, with a schedule 4:30 pm start. The Eagles will be holding Community Day events that include the local Special Olympics and the local Rockingham County lacrosse club teams, the MudDogs.
