WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Bridgewater College softball dropped two tight contests on Thursday afternoon.
Final Score: (Game 1) Moravian 4, Bridgewater 2; (Game 2) Milwaukee School of Engineering 8, Bridgewater 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
• Sarah Wimer opened the game with a leadoff double, but she was left stranded. Moravian put the leadoff runner aboard as well in the visiting half of the frame but did nothing with it.
• Moravian opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning after loading the bases with a pair of singles and a walk. A triple cleared the bases for the Greyhounds and put them in front 3-0. After a strikeout from starting pitcher Mackenzie Cauthorn, a groundout allowed for the runner from third to score and extend the lead to 4-0.
• Bridgewater responded in the top of the fourth. Torie Shifflett led off the inning with a base knock to put BC in business. A Samantha Martin single to the right side allowed the Eagles to put two on with only one away. A McKenna Mueller singled allowed Shifflett to score and put the Eagles on the board, 4-1.
• MU went down in order in the bottom of the fourth and Hannah Mahan got the Eagles in business with a lead off single in the top of the fifth. Mahan swiped second and advanced to third on a groundout before a Shifflett rip to the left side allowed for her to score, putting BC within pair 4-2.
• A flawless inning from Cauthorn and the Eagles defense gave the Eagles a chance heading into the sixth but BC was retired in order in both the sixth and the seventh.
GAME STATS
• Shifflett went 2/3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored the for the Eagles.
• Holly Walter recorded a pair of base hits and a walk in her trips to plate on the day for Moravian.
• Cauthorn took the loss for BC after going the distance and striking out six.
• Madi Cunningham picked up the win for Moravian after going the full seven innings and allowing eight hits.
• Seven different Eagles recorded hits in the loss.
Game Two
• Both teams got their leadoff runner aboard in the first inning but couldn’t push them across. Wimer led off with a single to the right side and was pushed all the way to third base by a pair of sacrifices but was stranded.
• Each side threatened to get on the board early, but the Raiders finally broke the scoring in the top of the fourth with an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead just before the midway point. BC instantly responded in the bottom half of the frame as Morgan Lucas pinch hit and delivered with a sacrifice fly to bring Mueller in to knot the game 1-1.
• One pitch into the sixth inning MSOE took the lead back with a long fly ball that hit off a fielder’s glove in right field and landed on the other side of the wall for a homerun. A two-run shot in the same inning extended the lead to 4-1 for the Raiders.
• The Raiders made a pitching change in the bottom of the sixth and BC took advantage. A pair of walks and a hit by pitch allowed the Eagles to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Mahan to come in to score and pushed Brooklynn Fridley and Kathrynn Thomas into scoring position. Another Wimer base knock allowed for Fridley to score and pulled the Eagles to within one. Shifflett continued her great day at the plate with a RBI single to score Thomas and tie the game. Jasmyn Smith stepped to the plate next and grounded out to short stop, but Molly Ecroyd was able to score and put the Eagles in front 5-4 heading into the seventh.
• The top half of the seventh opened with a fly out but a walk prompted a pitching change for BC as Cauthorn came in to attempt the save. A fielder’s choice allowed for a second runner to reach before a single tied the game 5-5. Morgan Long stepped to the plate next for the Raiders and delivered with a three-run homerun to take the lead, 8-5. BC got out of the inning but were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.
GAME STATS
• Wimer turned in an impressive 3-for-3 mark at the plate with a run driven in.
• Jocelyn Clodi took home the win for the Raiders despite giving up four earned runs and a pair of walks.
• Cauthorn took the loss for the second time on the day without recording an out.
• Long went 4/4 at the plate for MSOE and drove in five runs for the Raiders.
• Ecroyd, Shifflett and Mahan all swiped bases for BC in the loss.
UP NEXT
Bridgewater wraps up its stay in Florida with a pair of games on Saturday. BC will battle Carnegie Mellon and No. 14 Wartburg.
