TIMBERVILLE, Va – Virginia State Police are investigating a shooting that happened over the weekend inside a business in Timberville.

Sergeant Brent Coffey reported in a news release that the incident happened at around 10 am Saturday in the 160 block of Shenandoah Avenue.

When deputies from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office arrived, they located a man suffering from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

He was flown to U-V-A Medical Center for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.

Coffey reported that at this stage of the ongoing investigation, it appears two men were working through a training scenario, when one of the men discharged what he thought was a training pistol.

The firearm was instead a real handgun and the other man was accidentally shot.

No charges have been placed, but the investigation remains ongoing with consultation with the Rockingham County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
