A push to review policies in place regarding books and instructional materials allowed in Augusta County Public Schools drew a pair of very different responses during February’s first school board meeting.

Last month, chairman David Shifflett proposed stiffening the guidelines to make sure all books in county schools are age-appropriate for students.

Kathleen Cavendar is a mother of two Augusta County students. She told the board that they have a responsibility to let parents be parents.

However, Jeremy Nance said there is no reason for a child to have access to inappropriate, even sexual material.

Chairman Shifflett said the board will revisit updating the policy next month.
