DEERFIELD, Va. – A man is in serious condition after Augusta County authorities say he stole a car and fired into an occupied vehicle over the weekend.
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office said in a release that Oather Carl Puffenbarger Junior came after his estranged wife at her home in Deerfield on Sunday afternoon. She was able to escape and call 9-1-1, but authorities say Puffenbarger took off in her vehicle.
He then confronted two other family members in a nearby neighborhood, firing into the vehicle. The occupants returned fire, and Puffenbarger reportedly left the scene.
He suffered a life-threatening self-inflicted gunshot wound after authorities pulled him over in Grant County, West Virginia yesterday afternoon.
Puffenbarger faces nine felonies, including breaking and entering, grand larceny and attempted malicious wounding.
