NELLYSFORD, Va – A Waynesboro man is in custody following a traffic stop early Friday morning in Nelson County.

According to a news release, sheriff’s deputies initiated a traffic stop shortly after midnight on a speeding vehicle on Route 151 in the Nellysford area.

After the vehicle failed to stop, a chase ensued.

The suspect vehicle increased its speed and began driving erratically, crossing the center line several times. The vehicle continued this behavior all the way into the Roseland area. Assisting deputies successfully deployed tire deflation devices in attempt to safely bring the vehicle to a stop.

Although both front tires had been deflated, the vehicle continued to evade deputies to the intersection of Rt. 151 and Rt. 56 (Tye Brooke Hwy) where the vehicle struck a marked Sheriff’s Deputy patrol vehicle. After the collision, the vehicle continued to Rt. 29 where it turned north bound and then continued to Harvey Rd. The vehicle attempted to evade deputies by driving off road, through a ditch, over and embankment and through a church parking lot.

Again the vehicle struck a Sheriff’s Deputy’s patrol vehicle before driving through the yard of a residence and then striking a fence and going over an embankment where it stopped. The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. A short foot pursuit followed where deputies were able to apprehend the suspect without further incident.

The suspect was transported to UVA medical center for treatment to minor injuries sustained during the crash. No injuries to law enforcement were reported.
