Local families are preparing for the school year with back-to-school sales and adding items to their lists for children in need worldwide.

As students return to Harrisonburg for the new academic year, HPD and JMU PD officers will visit off-campus housing areas to promote student safety and build positive relationships. They will inform them about city ordinances, state laws, and best practices for being responsible community members.

The DMV reports that as of July 31, Virginia has experienced over 1,200 motorcycle crashes, resulting in 63 deaths and among the jurisdictions with the highest number of fatalities is Augusta County.

Virginia State Police say the crash was reported shortly after 8 p.m. Monday evening. A 2019 Ford transit van carrying four people was in the 100 block of Wayne Avenue when it was struck by the train and rolled over.

This year’s speaker series promises to be riveting and includes topics ranging from our upcoming presidential election to the ethics of gene editing. The Lyceum series runs through fall into early spring.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will conduct the following roadwork project starting next week, with come continuing over the coming weeks.
