ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Lawmakers and Governor Glenn Youngkin are going back to the drawing board next month to craft a new state budget.

As expected, the delay in the spending plan has trickle-down effects to local government entities such as Rockingham County Public Schools.

Superintendent Dr. Larry Shifflett told WSVA’s Jim Britt on Early Mornings Thursday that the delay with the state budget puts him in an awkward situation.

“We’re trying to, you know, at that time of year, issue contracts to folks and we’re still not sure where we’ll stand with the budget – will we get all the dollars that we need?” Shifflett said. “And now there’s been a few years where I think we’ve put some language in there, you know, ‘budget pending,” – just because we want to get the contracts out and give them to our employees before the end of the school year.”

The governor and lawmakers are scheduled to meet in a special session on May 13 and vote on a new state budget on May 15.
