GREENSBORO, N.C. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College softball team extended its winning streak to 12 games after a pair of wins over Guilford on Saturday.
Game 1
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 5, Guilford 2
Records: Bridgewater 17-4 (5-0 ODAC), Guilford 10-12-1 (0-3 ODAC)
How It Happened
• Bridgewater struck early as Caroline Malandra singled the opposite way on the game’s fifth pitch. She stole second and worked her way to third before Aniella Baldwin hit a sacrifice flyout to drive her in and make it 1-0. Guilford put two runners on in the bottom of the first, but a Mackenzie Cauthorn strikeout and a pair of infield pop-ups kept the scoreless streak alive.
• Both sides went down in order in the second, and BC added to the lead in the top of the third. Malandra doubled with two gone in the frame, and the rally started. Baldwin singled the opposite way to push Malandra to third nd McKena Mueller followed with a single up the middle to drive both BC speedsters in and make it 3-0. BC continued to threaten as Liliy Moyers singled and Lexi Schaaf drew a walk, but the bases were left jammed.
• A nifty defensive play kept the clean sheet going in the bottom of the third as GC looked to execute a sacrifice fly, but Abby Byrum threw a laser to the plate to get the runner out and end the inning after catching the flyball. BC capitalized on the momentum in the next frame. After two quick outs, Cauthorn reached on an error, and Malandra followed with another base rip to move her to second. Balwdwin went to the backside once again, and Cauthorn flexed her speed to score and make it 4-0 after three and-a-half innings.
• The shutout streak came to an end after the 51st consecutive scoreless frame. Guilford put two runners in scoring position with two outs before a well-executed bunt with two strikes dropped down for a hit on a squeeze play as everyone reached safely. The Quakers looked to drop another down, but Cauthorn flipped the ball to Malandra to end the side, now with a 4-1 lead.
• BC added to the lead in the sixth on another two-out rally. Cauthorn singled with two gone by and Molly Ecroyd came on to run. She stole second, and Malandra delivered again with a double down the line in left field to drive her in and make it 5-1. Guilford loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but could not scratch a run across. Guilford loaded the bases again in the bottom of the seventh, but this time with no outs. BC regrouped and executed beautifully. The next batter hit a round ball to Cauthron, she flipped it to Buzbee at the plate and she tagged the dish and fired to first for the nifty 1-2-3 double play. • Cauthorn (9-2) tossed her 31st complete game on the way to the victory. Malandra had a day at the plate as he went 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Mueller and Baldwin each drove in a pair of runs.
• Fisher (0-1) took the loss for Guilford. Stoner and Galek each had a pair of hits.
Game 2

Records: Bridgewater 18-4 (6-0 ODAC), Guilford 10-13-1 (0-4 ODAC)
How It Happened
• Malandra continued to see the ball well in game two, as she opened the game with a double. Baldwin followed with a single, and Mueller delivered as a sacrifice fly drove in Maldnra during the next at-bat. Evelyn Rhoads got the call and continued to roll as she worked through the Quakers in order, to open the contest.
• BC added to the play in the top of the third. Baldwin singled to open the third, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. Moyers followed as she reached on an error, but the play wasn’t done there as a throwing error after an error on the initial ground ball allowed Baldwin to score. Schaaf stepped in next and doubled to left field to drive in Moyers to make it 3-0 after three cracks at the dish for BC.
• Bridgewater added another run in the fourth as Jordan Wise singled and Sarah Kate Tozier came in to run. Tozier swiped second and advanced to third before Malandra singled to drive her in and make it 4-0. BC left Malandra and Baldin stranded in scoring position after two more stolen bases. Guilford struck back in the bottom of the frame as an error put a runner on. A double came a hitter later to make it 4-1.
• BC broke the game open in the top of the sixth. Ecroyd drew a walk to open the frame, and Malandra delivered again with a double to drive her in. Baldwin was tagged by a pitch, and Mueller followed with a single up the middle to drive in Malandra. Two quick outs looked to end the rally, but Olivia Eastlake delivered with a three-run blast to dead center field to make it 9-1. An infield hit, followed by a double, kept Guilford in the contest as a run scored on the two-bagger to make it 9-2.
• BC added to the lead in the top of the seventh as Ecroyd wore a pitch and stole second. A Malandra flyout moved Ecroyd to third, and Grace Anderson delivered in a pinch-hit spot. The rookie singled back up the middle to drive in Ecroyd and make it 10-2. Guilford looked to rally in the bottom of the frame and put runners on the corners with one out. A single up the middle drove in the lead runner, but a fielder’s choice and a pop-up to Malandra at second base secured the Eagles’ 12th win in a row.
Match Notes,
• Rhoads (8-1) went the distance for BC as she allowed just two unearned runs. Malandra, Mueller and Eastlake all drove in multiple runs as the Eagles stole eight bases for the second time this season.
• Northern (4-1) took the loss for the Quakers as she gave up two earned runs. Williams and Little had a pair of hits for the Quakers.
