HARRISONBURG, Va – Virginia U-S Senator Tim Kaine visited the Shenandoah Valley on Friday.
After beginning his day in Front Royal meeting with folks and getting an update on the Shenandoah Rail Trail, Kaine visited Cabinetworks Group in Mount Jackson and toured the manufacturing facility while discussing trade and other issues facing the local workforce.
Kaine introduced legislation this week that he says will increase transparency and accountability about the costs of police misconduct.
Speaking to reporters, Kaine explained that the Cost of Police Misconduct Act would require federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to report judgments and settlements related to police misconduct, including court fees and insurance payments, to the Department of Justice.
The introduction comes days after the family of Irvo Otieno reached an eight and half million-dollar settlement with the state, Henrico County, and the Henrico County sheriff after the 28-year-old died earlier this year from asphyxiation after being handcuffed and pinned to the floor at Central State Hospital.
Kaine ended the day at James Madison University where he participated in a fireside chat with J-M-U President Jonathan Alger to discuss finding common ground across partisan lines.
The conversation marked the inaugural event for the J-M-U Center for Civic Engagement’s “Common Good in the Commonwealth” series.
