RICHMOND, Va. — The commonwealth Department of Historic Resources has added two Valley locations to its Virginia Landmarks Register.

The agency said in a release yesterday that the Elkton Historic District in Rockingham County, and Long Meadow in southern Augusta County were both approved for the register by the Commonwealth’s Board of Historic Resources.

They said both properties represent Virginia’s “long and complex history.” Slaves were housed on the 25-acre Long Meadow property for more than 70 years, until the end of the Civil War. Elkton, meanwhile, was a boomtown during the early 20th century, capitalizing on the railroad’s popularity at the time.

The National Park Service could nominate both sites to the National Register for Historic Places.
