BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College women’s basketball team opened the 2025-26 campaign with a 74-37 victory over Mary Baldwin on Monday night.
How It Happened
• Bridgewater struck first and struck often in the opening frame. Jaiden Polston got BC on the board first as she laid it in at the cup off a dish from Jasmine Griffin to get the scoring started. Griffin drained a three-pointer, and Riley Corcoran followed with a coast-to-coast score off a steal to make it 7-0. BC went on to open the game in a 14-0 run, led by seven from Griffin and five from Corcoran, as her three-point make capped off the game-opening scoring spree. MBU got on the board with a pair of makes at the line, but five more BC points made it 19-2 after the opening 10 minutes, with Mary Baldwin still in search of its first field goal.
• Aylin Humpherys opened the scoring in period number two, but the Fighting Squirrels ended their field-goal drought at 10:48 og game time with a DaVyne Johnson bucket. MBU matched the Eagles score-for-score and even went on a short 11-6 run to close the gap to 31-17 with 3:13 to go in the opening half. BC replied by outscoring MBU 10-7 over the final three minutes and change of the frame, led by five from Corocran to take a 41-24 advantage into the break.
• Jay Garcia got BC on the board with a second-chance bucket to open the third quarter. Garcia scored again to push the lead to over 20 points at 46-24, and BC did not stop there. The Eagles held MBU without a field goal for the opening five minutes of the frame to the tune of a 10-2 run with contributions from Garcia, Corcoran, Griffin and Jaiden Polston. MBU found a make from the floor and followed it up with a pair of makes at the charity stripe, but a Bucket from Anna-Faith Brunk and a pair of makes at the line by Aisia Williams pushed the lead out to 55-30 heading to the fourth quarter.
• Neither team got on the board for the opening two minutes of the final stanza, but it was Brunk who got the scoring started for BC. The rookie opened what would become an 11-1 Eagle run as MBU did not have a field goal for over five minutes of game time once again. Polston capped off the scoring run to make it 66-31, but a make from deep range by Mary Baldwin stopped the scoring spree momentarily. MBU outscored BC 5-1 for 79 seconds, but a three-pointer from Humpherys sparked a 7-1 BC scoring advantage over the final 2:49 to lock up a 1-0 start.
Game Notes
• Garcia opened the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds to become the third different player to open the season with a double-double in as many seasons. The senior also started her fourth year as she crossed the 500 career rebound mark in the first quarter of the victory. Corcoran (16), Polston (14), Griffin (12), and Garcia all scored double figures for the Eagles.
• Johnson led MBU with 13 points. Shyla Williams grabbed six rebounds in the loss.
• BC won the battle on the glass 47-24. The Eagles’ defense held MBU to 22.7% from the floor and just 10 makes from the floor. Bridgewater also held a 50-6 margin in points in the paint.
