BRIDGEWATER, Va. (BC Athletics) – Bridgewater College women’s volleyball clicked on all cylinders en route to a straight-set victory against No. 11 nationally ranked Washington & Lee on home court Wednesday night.
The Eagles are now 2-2 against nationally recognized programs.
The Basics
Score: Bridgewater (BCE) 3, Washington & Lee (WLU) 0
Records: BCE (10-4 OVR, 3-1 ODAC), WLU (11-2 OVR, 2-2 ODAC)
How It Happened
• Although an effort to regain momentum in the opening set, the Eagles held strong and soon turned the action around, giving the Generals a tough time to work effectively on the offensive side. In the first set, BCE powered through on a five-point surge started off by Gabby Atwell enlarging its lead to 14-6. Then, the Generals found a late push in the set working to a seven-point scoring run, but BCE weathered the rally well and closed the set off with a Claire Griffith putdown for a 25-21 opening set score.
• Despite an early breakthrough to start the second set from WLU, the Eagles did not panic. Faith DePew nailed a service ace to knot up the score at 7 apiece and never trailed afterwards. The attacking trio, Atwell, Griffith, and DePew, all struck down consecutive kills which helped seal the second set win, 25-21.
• The Eagles kept ramping up their attacking sequences with successful offensive connections off defiant digs by Anna Black. BCE boosted to a 16-10 lead off a four-point rally and solidified the set from there. Reagan Stoop found the open spot in the opposition’s court with a service ace and soon after, Griffith suffocated any potential late scoring chances by WLU with a potent strike to take the final set at 25-14.

• Senior Faith DePew shined in the ranked win as the opposite hitter tallied a team-high 12 kills along with two blocks.
• The Eagles shut down Washington & Lee’s top kills leader on the season, limiting Riley Debiec to four kills on the night.
