HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) – Court Square Theater (CST) features the Lua Project’s Mexilachian sound Saturday, May 10. The 7:30 pm concert is partially supported by the Virginia Commission for the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts.

According to a press release, Mexilachian music is a new style of traditional music inspired by Mexican and Appalachian song forms, along with Jewish and Eastern European tonalities, Baroque melodic ideas, and narrative storytelling approaches.

Called a “cultural pollinator,” the Lua Project was formed by David Berzonsky and Estela Knott after almost a decade of performing and recording throughout the Western hemisphere, ranging from Peru and Mexico to Brazil and California.

Lua Project’s musical stories are refreshing, disarming, joyous, and haunting. The current lineup also features Matty Metcalfe and Christen Hubbard, two utterly authentic musical co-conspirators who have travelled widely before settling in the shadow of the Blue Ridge. They are emerging masters of Appalachian fiddle tunes, Irish music, Argentinian tango.

Doors open at 7 pm for the 7:30 pm show. Advance tickets are $25 ($35 at door) and are available at courtsquaretheater.org or by calling the box office at 540.433.9189. The concert is part of the Upbeat Downtown Series, sponsored by Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community (VMRC).
