BROADWAY, VA (Rocktown Now) — Rockingham County Fire and Rescue have deemed a house that caught on fire on New Year’s Day a total loss.
Rockingham County Fire Chief Jeremy Holloway says they received a call at approximately 8:25 a.m. for a house fire in the 300 block of Broadmoor Lane in Broadway. The initial call came from an occupant that was alerted to the fire from a working smoke alarm in the home. While enroute, responder’s received updated information that an occupant of the home was trapped on an upper floor.
Upon arrival to the scene, firefighters reported a significant fire on the first floor and an occupant at a window on the back side of the home. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue the occupant and initiated steps to control the fire.
Five total people were in the home at the time of the fire. One person was transported by helicopter to the VCU Burn Center in Richmond. Two people were transported by ambulance to Sentara RMH, one of which had jumped from a second story window prior to the fire department’s arrival. All victims are expected to recover from their injuries.
The Fire Marshal’s Office investigation has revealed that the origin of the fire was in the living room and was caused by an electrical failure in the ceiling. The home is a total loss with a damage estimate of approximately $265,000.
Chief Holloway says that the outcome could have been very different if the home didn’t have working smoke alarms. He reminds residents to check smoke alarms regularly to ensure they are working and installed properly.
