ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The Rockingham County School Board is considering changes that may be needed as developments are projected to push capacities in the county’s schools.

Superintendent Dr. Larry Shifflett presented the RCPS capital improvement plan at Monday night’s school board meeting. That included updates on renovation projects at some of the county’s schools, but current projects also showed that a new elementary school and redistricting could be on the table in the coming decades.

Chair Matt Cross said that as they navigate these decisions, they need to keep the county’s residents in mind.

“We know that parents and kids love going to their school and they’re going to be really upset when they find out they’ve got to go to another elementary school,” Cross said. “But I think it’s our job to be fiscally responsible with the taxpayer money and say, hey, we’ve got a lot of room here on the east end that we could possibly use, and it’s not because we want to, but we’re really kind of being forced that way to do that.”

Shifflett added that the division should finish renovations at Elkton Elementary School before planning to move students.

A book is retained

Only one book was on the agenda for consideration from the Superintendent’s content review committee during Tuesday night’s meeting. The board voted unanimously to retain “Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale” by Lauren Myracle following Shifflett’s recommendation.
