Nancy May Hoover, 90, of Broadway, VA passed away October 17, 2024 at VMRC Yoder House.

Nancy was the daughter of Howard V and Goldie Turner May.  She was born May 8, 1934 on her father’s thirtieth birthday.

On April 28, 1951 she married Carl Grey Hoover, who preceded her in death June 22, 2022.  They were the parents of one son, Craig Alan Hoover who was born August 20, 1952.  He and his wife Terri live in Broadway, VA.

Grandchildren include Erin Hoover, Tucson, Arizona; Kimberly Lewis (husband Jerry), La Marque, Texas; and Neil Hoover (wife Chelsea), Galveston, Texas.  Great grandchildren include Evelyn Alane Lewis, Elijah Emmanual Lewis; and Leo Alan Hoover.

The following are siblings of Nancy: Lois Rhodes, Phoebe Orebaugh, Joe T May, Benjamin L May, Stephen F May and Deborah Proctor.  In addition, she had many nieces and nephews – 14 on the May side and 18 on the Hoover side.

Nancy worked as a hairdresser for many years and owned and operated a business called “The Beauty Spot” for more than 30 years. She formed close relationships with her clients that she maintained for her entire lifetime.

In addition to operating her business, she was active in a number of organizations, one of which was the Plains District Memorial Museum.  The museum maintains archives of soldiers of the area who die in wars of the twentieth century, and Nancy contributed the profiles of three of those veterans.

She served as president of the Broadway-Timberville Chamber of Commerce.  In 1994 Oliver North was running for the United States senate and was invited to their annual banquet. The “New Yorker” magazine covered the event, and Nancy was later interviewed and quoted.  A caricature of her was shown along with the quote.

Nancy was the first woman to serve on the Board of Directors for the Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative. Eventually she became the first woman to serve as Chairman of the Board of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives.  In 2003 she became the first woman to receive the coveted Leadership Award for that organization.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM November 2, 2024 at Grandle Funeral Home Chapel in Broadway.
