HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – Wake Forest’s Lauren Storey converted on a penalty stroke with just over five minutes remaining to force overtime before netting the game-winner thirty seconds into the overtime period to clip James Madison, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at the JMU Field Hockey Complex in non-conference field hockey action.

The Demon Deacons (6-8, 1-4 ACC) earned 11 penalty corners compared to one for the Dukes (10-4, 5-0 MAC).

Fifth-year Carissa Tambroni and senior Cassidy Strittmatter were the lone goal scorers for JMU. Senior goalkeeper Katie Fricke made a career-high nine saves in 38:36 of action.

In addition to Storey’s two goals, Lotte Smorenberg found the back of the net for the Deacs. Faye Janse and Ava Moore added assists, while Ellie Todd registered four stops in cage.

Quoting Head Coach Christy Morgan
“We went into the game with a good game plan. Ninety percent of the time we executed that plan, the ten percent that we didn’t, Wake Forest capitalized. We had possession and a lot of opportunities – the ones we did finish were beautiful – but we had lapses. I’m proud of the team, but we need to play smarter and work to put ourselves in low-risk situations.”

How It Happened
• Tambroni opened the scoring, taking advantage of a broken play in the circle and chipping a shot over the Wake netminder early in the second quarter.
• The Demon Deacons responded just over three minutes later with an inlet pass from Janse to Moore to even the game at 1-1.
• Strittmatter dribbled through the WF defense and delivered a reverse flick to put the Dukes ahead 2-1 halfway through the third.
• Wake Forest drew a penalty stroke at the 5:13 mark of the fourth, executed by Storey to the top left corner.
• With a player advantage, Moore sent an inlet pass to Storey who turned and shot near side for the game-winner.

Game Notes
• James Madison trails Wake Forest, 14-4, dating back to 1993.
• The Deacs held the edge in shots (18-7) and shots on goal (12-6).
• Strittmatter has scored in four of the last five games.
• After registering four points across the first four seasons of her career, Tambroni has recorded eight points in the last three games.
