HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The Harrisonburg Planning Commission gave its blessing to a major housing project that would be built around the old Frazier Quarry.
Waterman Investments wants to build over 900 housing units around the old quarry that would be converted into a lake.
The Quarry Heights project would include 869 multi-family units and 48 single-family units. The construction investment would be $216 million.
Officials with the developers pointed out at Wednesday night’s meeting that the proposed development is estimated to have a tax value over $328 million, which equates to more than $3 million in new property tax revenue.
The Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend the project.
Commissioner Richard Baugh says predicting the future is really hard and there are all sorts of factors that affect population growth.
The vote came after over a dozen people spoke during a public hearing, many of whom were homeowners in that area and they expressed a number of concerns.
The proposal will now go before City Council at its Nov. 26 meeting.
