NEW ORLEANS (JMU Athletics) – For the second time in as many weeks, James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett III has been voted the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

After a record-performance the week prior, Barnett III turned in another stellar performance in JMU’s 63-7 Family Weekend victory against Ball State, combining for 324 yards and six touchdowns.

He finished the game 20-of-28 for 280 passing yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 44 yards and a score. He once again the led Sun Belt quarterbacks in both passing touchdowns and total scores, as his consecutive performances helped the Dukes to a two-game scoring record (133). JMU was also the first team since a Joe Burrow-led LSU squad in 2019 to score at least 63 points in back-to-back weeks.

Over his past two outings, adding in his North Carolina numbers, he’s combined for 13 total touchdowns (10 passing, 3 rushing) and 811 yards of offense, which includes 668 passing yards.

This honor also comes on the heels of Barnett III being named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 for the second straight week.

The Dukes have now produced back-to-back seasons in which their starting quarterback has been named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week in consecutive weeks.

Barnett III and the Dukes open their third season of Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they travel to Monroe, La., to face ULM. The inaugural meeting between the teams will kick off at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) from Malone Stadium and will air on the JMU Radio Network (92.1 FM | 550 AM) and on the Varsity Network App.
